I think it counts very much.

I think that's fair. Some of the more popular themes (like zenburn or 
molokai) don't use perfectly black backgrounds. But there are quite a few 
that do. My favorites so far have a fairly dark (or black) bg, and 
acutally show all 8 categories of colors.
