Well not voting because you are incapable of distinguishing between competent persons and incompetent persons is why the Democratic candidates lost against Reagan, Bush and Trump. Unfortunately people seduced by the lies of the right wing of the Republican party and their own racism out-numbered those of us who vote for competence. Even before Reagan lies were told about the Federal Government but fear of Stalilnist and Maoist Communism held the people who would teart down the Federal Government at bay. Why do they want to tear down the Government for and by the people? They don't like the restrictions the peoples' goverment imposes on their enterprises. The Government he is referring to are the employees of the Federal Government which is a ideally a meritocracy the values of which are embedded in the Civil Service. In a good government those employees leave only at the end of their careers. But you vote for the Elected Officials who were formerly bound by the Constitution and good sense to honor the decisions of former elected officials as to the agencies and employees require to furnish services to the electorate and control industries which were not good for the Electorate. With Reagan came a lot of folks who think that the Government Agencies should not have been enlarged from a past time such as their childhood when everything seemed perfect to them ignoring the roughly 2.5X increase in population. I compare the population in 1940 (when I was 3 yoa) to 2020 (when I was 83) in this next line: 1940 -132,164,569 to 2020 - 331,449,281. Now looking at the Federal Employees it seems clear to me that you would need a considerable increase in Federal employment to deal with the services required by a larger population. 1940 - Federal executive employees 699,000 2024 - Federal executive employees 3,000,000 Besides the increase in population we also have to factor in services now provided dealing with pollution, agency oversight and other legislatively mandated positions. This leaves out the Department of Defense and the Veterans Adminstration I believe at both ends of the measurement period. Most people making an issue of this are industrialists affected by tighter regulation of the by-products of their operation which might cut into the profitabilty of the enterprise such as the Mine Owners/Operators who are reluctant to provide the proper safety equipment to their workers. These are the people who want to reduce the income from taxes until the Federal Government "is small enough to drown in a bathtub" as they say. So you want to change the way the country is run? You do that by voting for people competent to make the changes not for incompetent people who have exploited your ignorance and prejudices. bliss - living in a future that never happened in my lifetime...
