This might be an opportunity to mention Delta Chat. It can send emails, or instant messages via delta chat's servers. So if you want an instant message user interface but the ability to communicate with people not on delta chat too, you can use their email address. The usual objection is that email is not instant, but then neither are instant messages in my experience because people don't reply instantly.
