Can't you just make animate or gifview the default tool for the image/gif mime-type? (It has been years since I've tried to view an image from a text mode browser, and those do tend to support external tools for various non-HTML content types. Dillo isn't text mode, but I last used it in pre 1.0, so I don't know what it does these days. My recollection is that it focused on "correctness", so I'd suspect it's an option.)
