My second digital camera was a "Millenium Edition" Kodak. The prior one, also a Kodak, was designed to be held more like a pair of binoculars than like a rangefinder or SLR 35mm camera. The second one was far easier to use and had picture quality that was actually usable rather than being more or less a toy or curiosity. It still wasn't a replacement for my film cameras, but it was more portable and much less expensive to operate. > > That functionality (usually with me, minimum startup time) has now been > replaced by a smartphone. I want to have an optical viewfinder. I take pictures outdoors, and an LCD display washes out when in direct sunlight. I suppose an electronic viewfinder would be superior to an optical one in that it would allow you to review the pictures you have taken when using the camera in bright sun, but I like optical viewfinders. I have an older Canon point and shoot with an optical viewfinder (the A1000IS), but when it stops working I don't think I'll be able to replace it. Actual SLRs, with mirror and optical finder, are more expensive and much less portable than my point and shoot. It seems to me that most people who take digital pictures these days take "selfies" and blurry pictures of half-eaten plates of food at restaurants. I suppose that you don't need much of a viewfinder for either.
