Turns out the machine's network was= badly configured and that's probably what was causing this problem. Curious= ly firefox could browse these sites without any problem despite not having a= ny proxy defined and it took the command line to reveal the issue. I think I'd first try "dig www.google.com" to be sure that it is = resolving, then I believe I'd try to fetch the URL from your code sample = using cUrl.
