The current versions of Python are 2.7 (first released in 2010, and getting periodic bugfix releases) and 3.5 (released 2015, and also getting bugfix releases). I strongly recommend you use a newer version - either 3.4 or 3.5, one of which will be available in most Linux repositories. You can always grab the latest from python.org. If you can't find a book that makes use of 3.4+, ask around; there are quite a few books which have been updated to that. The feature difference between 3.1 and 3.5 is huge. ChrisA
