I've seen some gross violations of this rule: a maintenance coder (who I never met) called Ken Eagle had changed: if he needed extra variables he invariably used KEN[0-9] for numeric variables and EAGLE[0-9] for alphanumeric variables. It was [ahem] character-forming to maintain programs that Ken Eagle had made changes to.
