You can tell the type: when they find they’re on the losing end of the argument, they resort to abusive, ad-hominem attacks. This way, they hope to distract attention from the actual point. The trick is to keep bringing them back to the point. Sometimes this makes them angrier, which can be a source of amusement in itself. :)
