Maybe, and this is generally true at least in Java's case, because he's dealing with an environment where networking is a vital part of the programming requirements? Don't PHP and C++ programmers ever have to deal with networking issues like that? Isn't getting your program actually to run in the desired environment an essential part of the programmer's skill set? You will note, I'm sure, that at least the Java newsgroup is geared to the programmer, not just the language as such, and Java programmers being generally a pragmatic bunch generally like their software to actually deploy and do useful things.
