Doing and reasoning about what one does are really two things. However, in this case they actually _had_ described their requirements - and even in a way that I was capable of coming up with the proper algorithm. This means a certain amount of thought must have been done already. They just did not recognize it when they saw the result and for an unknown reason immediately jumped to a conclusion.
