This is for Java programm*ers*, not programm*ing*.  Your question is entirely 
on topic.

They don't really avoid fees, and you have no less risk of being unemployed in 
6 months with a "regular" job.

Unemployment insurance is regulated at the state level.  Why don't you ask 
your state's office of employment instead of a world-wide bunch of programmers 
who are not unemployment experts?

Sure there is - the real deal is that you're on contract for a while, then 
direct with the employer for a while, where "a while" might be zero time.

Just like any other job.
