How easy/hard/common is to create Custom Controls in Java?

I have an attraction to innovative forms of GUIs. While the myriad of 
controls provided off the shelf oftentimes suffice, in the other times 
one is left saying:

"Gee, I wish this control had such and such little widget here that 
allowed the user to do this and that".

My only experience is with C#/WPF and C++ and it is a royal PITA!

Programmers are hard and expensive to find.  Sometimes, ones lucks out 
and find the precise jewel one needs on the Internet. Alas, the original 
author is nowhere to be found, if you have a question.
