...and to make and maintain...  It's like running with a prisoner shakle, it 
drags you down, but it is not easy to get rid of them ;-).

When I took over the Mikron IT in 2005, I just ditched the sendmail stuff 
without even looking at it, and created all we needed with postfix from 
scratch.  There were several needs the previous admin didn't get around to 
add to the sendmail.cf.

Or the NSA pays too much for new sendmail exploits ;-).  The zero-day 
exploit market has driven prices up to $200k per vulnerability, driven 
mostly by secret services.  The result is that companies have raised their 
bug bounties to a considerable fraction of that, because otherwise, they 
wouldn't get that many bugs reported.

Given that sendmail in the timeframe Dan Bernstein reported always was a 
full entry door into any machine (remote takeover of any non-root user and 
local takeover of the machine, both with a single program!), it is too 
valuable to let be fixed.  It is still a complex, monolithic program.
