If I were deciding on the basic functionality I needed for traversing a
linked-list in Forth, I'd at least want the following:
-a word in Forth to get the starting node
-a word in Forth to get the ending node
-a word in Forth to get the current node
-a word in Forth to get the prior node and
which updates the current node position
-a word in Forth to get the next node and
which updates the current node position
-a word in Forth to set the node traversal direction to backwards
-a word in Forth to set the node traversal direction to forwards
-a generic word in Forth which gets another node in the
traversal direction and which updates the current node position
The key thing here, that I didn't notice in the replies by others, is the
ability to set a general direction for traversal and a generic word to
continue traversing in that direction. This is useful for loops. I.e., you
can set the direction of traversal outside the loop or even in an unrelated
word. This can make the loop body independent of the traversal direction.
In the case of a Forth dictionary, those would probably be constructed to
return the xt or a numeric identifier for a specific entry. As you've
noted, the primary question is in regards to a Forth dictionary, in which
case, functionality is needed to get the xt and/or numeric identifier of the
dictionary entry, and the name of the dictionary entry from the xt or
identifier.
