It's a minority opinion but I think C# is what Java could have been. 
Microsoft did have Visual J++ in the late '90s and I liked it. In fact I 
stumbled over the CD a couple of weeks ago when looking for something 
else. However a Sun lawsuit put the end to it. There was a J# that didn't 
last too long, and finally C# incorporated lessons learned.

MS really confused things in the transition from .NET Framework to .NET 
Core but, with the exception of GUIs, .NET works on Linux. 

I play around with MCUs so that is mostly C/C++ or MicroPython. As usual 
you have more control and speed with C but if you're not pushing the edge 
MicroPython usually is a shorter development time.
