The misunderstanding is yours, I'm afraid. You wrote, "BigO is about worst case behavior." That is definitionally incorrect, and it's not really something that is up for debate or open to alternative interpretations. If you want to account for the complexity of a comparison function, and you can characterize it in some useful, way, you can of course incorporate that into the analysis. For example, string comparison is linear in the size of the input strings; if one denotes that as m, then the time required to sort strings using heapsort might be described is O(m*n*log(n)) - Dan C.
