hello, I really want to change my profile picture, but knowing it sends out a notification to everyone on my friends list really stresses me out, and so I was wondering if it's possible to change your profile picture without your friends receiving a notification?

Facebook wouldn't tell us how many, but it's only fair to assume that millions of people added a blue, red, and white French flag filter to their Facebook profile photos in the days following this month's terrorist attacks in Paris. Facebook prompted users to adopt the imagery with the following words: "Change your profile picture to support France and the people of Paris."

As popular as the French flag filter has been on Facebook over the past week, it's a relatively new feature. Facebook told NPR it has tried this kind of thing only once before, after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in June. Twenty-six million people adopted that Facebook-provided pride flag filter for their profile after the ruling, according to the tech company. (Update: After this piece was published, a Facebook spokeswoman reached out to NPR to note that the company has also offered "sports-themed filters" allowing users to add a frame or overlay to their profile images.)

There have been others who tried the same strategy: Planned Parenthood urged people to to adopt a pink profile filter that read "#StandwithPP" after the organization faced allegations earlier this year that it was illegally selling fetal tissue harvested during abortions.

We reached out to Facebook about the whole French flag controversy, and a spokesman said that "following this week's events, we've received a lot of feedback from our community and we're working on better ways to help people show support for things they care about via their profiles."

The spokesman continued, "While this work will take time, we're starting to build out a platform that will give people the option to create and use features like profile picture overlays to express support for a variety of causes."

Say cheese: this is going to be the photo representing you or your brand on Facebook. This is the square photo that appears on your timeline layered over your cover photo. Your profile picture will also appear when you post to other walls, comment on posts or when your profile is searched.

Your Facebook cover photo will only appear on your Facebook timeline, but it is a lot bigger than the profile picture, which gives you more freedom to choose something creative. Where your profile picture might be a good choice for a picture of you, or a brand logo, use this space to post something that speaks more toward you as an individual or as a brand.

Instagram is based on visuals, which should be an indication of how important it is to follow these image size guidelines. Ensure your profile image is recognizable so users can find you even easier through search or explore.

All TikTok users have the option to upload a profile image to their accounts. This is the perfect opportunity for businesses to showcase their personalities through branding or to highlight a specific campaign.

When setting up your Pinterest account you have the option to do so using Facebook, Twitter or email. If you choose Facebook or Twitter, Pinterest will pull in the profile image that you have set there.

If you want the tl;dr response, stop here: social media is a pretty effective mechanism for peer pressure. If you disagree, please consider how many temporary profile pictures have been updated on Facebook to red, white, and blue in the wake of the horrific attacks in Paris (including perhaps your own). We know that online peer pressure is powerful. But what we don't know is whether that pressure is driving real change.

The catch here is that the Framingham data represents an offline dataset. So in the case of the smokers who quit and influenced their friends to follow, this happened without a temporary profile picture or an "I quit smoking" Facebook status. This behavior played out offline where it was vetted and assessed before it was adopted. That kind of critical thinking is often missing from the online pressure to conform. What does it mean if your profile picture was not updated? Maybe you're not active on Facebook often, in which case, you'd probably get a pass. But if you are active, does it mean you condone the attacks? What do we really accomplish with these kinds of acts of solidarity? Ultimately, it sends a message about who we are as people; it serves to distinguish us from an other--it says we aren't like them, we aren't bad people. But does it stop there?

Beyond our responses to acts of terrorism, we are establishing new data points upon which we can be judged. In the Framingham study, smokers mingled freely with nonsmokers in 1971 and they were distributed evenly throughout the network. However, by 2001 as groups of smokers quit, those who persisted were socially isolated. What if we required people to list their status as smokers or non-smokers--how would our networks shift as a result of this information? The temporary profile picture is a great way to get people to initially think about what is happening around them. But what does it mean beyond that? How does it drive change in a meaningful way? Right now, it may be a conversation point, but it may also provide an easy way out of having to take action in the real world. There are presently voices online highlighting ways that people can help--but will people feel that need to once they've updated their profile picture?

Certain people are more likely to use these dyadic displays than others. People who are very satisfied with or committed to their romantic relationship are more likely to post couple profile photos or represent their relationships on social media in other ways. The more in love a coupled-up person is, and the more jealousy they report, the more likely they are to post their relationship status publicly on Facebook.

We found that people who were more motivated to protect their relationships from these kinds of threats were more likely to use dyadic displays. Wanting to keep the good thing they had going was one reason why highly satisfied and committed people were particularly likely to feature their partner on their social media profiles.

These dyadic displays not only communicate commitment, but also suggest that the profile owner is unlikely to be receptive to romantic advances from other people. This may discourage others from trying to get closer to the profile owner, perhaps protecting the relationship.

Your profile and cover photos show how hundreds or maybe thousands of people recognize you. They make the first impression when someone searches for you on Facebook or when you send a friend request. Facebook has specific guidelines for their sizes. So to make the best first impression, it's important to know how to resize pictures for Facebook profile, your photos and optimize them for this platform.

Skylum's Online Photo Editor also offers a range of other features, including AI-powered adjustments that can help you enhance your image in just a few clicks. With a bit of practice, you can use these tools to create even more engaging and aesthetically pleasing Facebook covers or profile photos.

Before changing the aspect ratio of your image for Facebook, we recommend a quick and easy method to improve it. First, open the Presets tab and let Luminar Neo's AI analyze the image. In just a few seconds, it will offer you the most suitable Presets to transform your picture with a single click. Furthermore, you can adjust the intensity of the applied Preset and even further edit it to match your style and taste.

If someone suspects that a picture marked with one of these designs is being misused, they can report it to Facebook and we will use the design to help determine whether it should be removed from our community.

To do that, click on your photo in profile page. Then change the privacy mode. It will allow visitors to view your photo but they can't like or comment. This is when you are accessing the basic mobile version.

And fixing your picture is a one-time action that gives you lasting benefits. So invest some time in the most important aspect of your online presence. Here are nine ways to nail your social media profile picture.

This is especially important for people with common names. If someone sees you in one place and wants to connect in another, make it easy for them by using the same picture on all of your professional social media profiles.

Your Facebook profile picture is the first image that greets visitors to your profile on the site. When you change it, Facebook automatically starts an album for your current and previous profile pictures. While you can't stop users from seeing your current profile picture, you can block people from viewing the album that contains older photos. Remember that all users, even nonfriends, can see your current profile picture even if the rest of your profile is private.

Click "Custom" option in the privacy menu to block only certain people from seeing your profile pictures. Enter a name in the "Hide this from" field to stop that user from seeing the photos -- names entered in this field must be on your friend list. Click "Save Changes" at the bottom of the window.

Focus is key. Consider your target audience when creating a board, and make sure it is something that will be of interest to them. Keep in mind that the first boards on your profile are the most visible. Create a secret board where you collect content that inspires your content strategy.

Facebook crossed 2.3 Billion users this year. Last year Facebook estimated that more than 10% of these accounts are fake or duplicates. Facebook is adopting several strategies to point out fake profiles, but it is not enough. It is not just a concern for Facebook, but it is also a concern of real users like me and you. How do we trust a person on Facebook?
