Sometimes travelling between cities can become tiring, as the roads are really long. Therefore make sure you carry enough food and water to stay hydrated and fresh while driving. Accidents due to fatigue and drowsiness are common. Therefore it is best you take all the necessary care to avoid such accidents.


Renting a car in Indonesia is very cheap as compared to other countries because of the atrocious driving habits. Road conditions are very poor and the roads are not properly maintained. During the rainy season, floods are common and many important roads in Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi are flooded. Therefore it is highly recommended that if you really want to travel by car, hire a driver at a low cost so that you can avoid any accidents that might spoil your trip.






You cannot drive in Indonesia using a UK driving licence. You can drive using an International Driving Permit issued in Indonesia. International Driving Permits issued in the UK may need to be endorsed by the Indonesian licensing office in Jakarta.

The Indonesian driving license (Indonesian: Surat Izin Mengemudi, abbreviated as SIM) is a legal document required for a person to be allowed to drive a motor vehicle in Indonesia. It is issued by the Indonesian National Police (POLRI), renewable every 5 years, and is valid in all ASEAN states without an International Driving Permit. Driving license holders are subject to all Indonesian road rules and regulations. There is no provisional driving license in Indonesia.[1]


Every person who drives a motorized vehicle on the road without a driving license as intended in Article 77 paragraph (1) shall be punished with a maximum imprisonment of 4 (four) months or a maximum fine of Rp1,000,000,- (one million rupiah)[3]Every person who drives a motorized vehicle on the road who cannot show a valid driving license while driving a motorized vehicle described in Article 106 paragraph (5) letter b shall be punished with imprisonment for a maximum of 1 (one) month and/or a fine of a maximum of Rp250,000,- (two hundred and fifty thousand rupiah).[4]


Apart from criminal penalties, imprisonment or fines, perpetrators of traffic crimes may be subject to additional penalties in the form of revocation of their driving license or compensation for losses caused by traffic crimes.[5] Traffic violations on driving licenses are marked by National Police officers by recording them in the Driver Registry database electronically and/or manually.[6] In the event that a traffic violation has reached a value of 12 (twelve) the driving license is temporarily revoked, and if it has reached 18 (eighteen) then the driving license can be revoked as an additional sanction based on a court decision.[7]


Indonesia is not a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. However, the International Driving Permit (IDP) is honored and is issued by the Indonesian National Police. Holders of the Indonesian driving license do not need to acquire an international driving permit to drive in any ASEAN countries in accordance with The Kuala Lumpur Agreement of 1985.[8]


For me, the biggest source of culture shock in Indonesia is not the spicy food and rice with every meal. First thing that you should realize is that driving in Indonesia, is not like driving in Europe or America. Always wear a helmet! I am sure you will see many people driving without any helmets and yes, it can be very hot with a helmet on, but please be smart and protect yourself and especially your head! In Bali, it is obligated to wear a helmet, but there are some exceptions for instance in small villages or during ceremonies when the Balinese people wear Batik.


You need a driving license when you would like to rent and/or drive a scooter in Indonesia. Usually your national driving license is not valid, so make sure you buy an international driving license before you go to Indonesia. Usually these international licenses are valid for one year.


At some intersection curves, you have traffic lights. However, if you take a curve while driving on the left side and entering a road immediately on the left side you do not have to wait. It does not make sense to wait, because no traffic can interfere you curve. However, sometimes people cross the street at the intersections, so make sure you always slow down a bit before you take the curve.


When you are driving, you will also see some small local shops selling petrol in glass bottles, often in vodka bottles. The quality of this petrol (bensin) is not always good, so I recommend you to fill your gas at a normal gasoline shop. However, this bensin might be handy when your fuel is running low and there is no official gasoline shop in sight.


As said before, the traffic in Indonesia is unpredictable. Always pay attention when driving. Anybody (people or animals) can and does enter a main road at any time and always watch the road for holes, stones or anything else. Be careful when it has rained. Some roads can become slippery after or during rain fall.


There are often police check points on the road, where they will stop every scooter to check your driving license and insurance of the scooter. They will stop the foreigners first, because some of them may have the wrong documents and they can then charge you a fee before they let you go. Foreigners often mean earning some extra salary. Sometimes they ask a lot of money or ask you to come to the police office. Just stay calm. Make sure you have two wallets with you. One with just a small amount of money in it and say it is all you have. You probably can get away with a small fee and enjoy the rest of your trip. When you do have the right documents, they have no right to ask you for a fee and just keep disagreeing with fee. They will let you go as well.


I could just go get the IDP from Bangkok Area 3 office (Sukhumvit) but I read somewhere that they would ask for a 1 year visa for that. I have a 5 year Thai driving licence and lived here for 10 years but currently I'm on a tourist visa. Would they really ask for such documents?
