The key is to start with a panoramic photo of the right proportions. I do not remember the ideal proportions off-hand. Maybe someone here has them handy.

Just some thoughts. Although I don't know what you are shooting for, I think I see your problem.

For my Flickr header, I just accepted what they gave me even though it's a chopped off version of the original. It serves its purpose.

Occasionally, a group borrows one of my photos for its header. It's never what the original looks like but sometimes it gives me an idea for a new crop.

Headers anywhere seem to require a compromise. Maybe, just try a different picture.

I would say the 400 pixels is a much less critical dimension these days. It used to be that flickr toolbars would overlap on top of the cover area, crowding the image. These bars were moved outside of the actual image when the new stack pages were designed. The cover is dynamic and contingent on the size of your window so the top and bottom edges of the cover photo can still disappear if your window is wide. I still like using a large photo for my covers. I have always been able to move a potential cover up and down and to be able to lock it in place. I have never seen an acceptable explanation as to why some members have trouble dragging a cover around and locking it in place, but this anomaly has affected some members for a very long time, and their best option is to crop their cover to 2048x768. Colins' cover looks pretty good on his pages now, you will notice that his cover will have some repeating going on, top and bottom, if your window dimension is tall and skinny. Colin appears to currently be using 2048x322 as his cover dimension.

I really messed up this time. I had over 9,000 photos on flickr. I was playing with my I phone and clicked on flickr. It went to camera roll photos. I thought I was deleting photos strickly out of my phone, but when I went on flickr on my PC, my photo stream shows only 275 photos and the camera roll shows 5000 +. I guess I deleted half of my photos on camera roll and almost all on my photostream. Are they all gone for good, or is there anyway I can restore them? I have 818,000 views before this and I was shooting for a million, but I think I messed things up for good. Anybody have any GOOD news for me, or should I go in a corner and cry my eyes out. Regards, Gary

Possibly related to the issue on my account, where it says 1.3M views as logged in, but when I view my account as logged out it says 692.4K. Obviously all the views on my private pictures (only me, and Flicr F&F) are excluded by the system which treats those views as if they do not exist unless the content behind them becomes public.

So then, in the case of OP, the count drops, seeing the content is missing.

EDIT: I reported this in the thread about the new About page and was told the discrepancy between views as logged in and as logged out was a bug:

www.flickr.com/help/forum/en-us/72157681711158094/#reply7...

Thus I am speculating the drop in views for OP could be a bug.

So far so good, but in any case the 'bug' has not been fixed.

I'm trying to find out where high numbers of views are coming from, and thought it could be because some of my photos were in Explore on those days. But it seems difficult to go back to those days for Explore, and anyway when I have done I can't see any of my photos.

What's the most likely way there would be big spikes in views for several of my photos just on some days but then big gaps before it happens again?

Thanks

Mike

PS (All views are shown as source Flickr)

Mike Sands:

I'm trying to find out where high numbers of views are coming from,

Which "high views" by the way? Not one of your photos got the number of views it would have garnered when picked up by Explore. Your most viewed photo has just 70 views. Speaking of Explore: hundreds and usually thousands of views (in a relatively short time).

What was once "inundation" is now merely "noticeable".

Comments are not a sign anymore. Well, maybe the "congrats on explore" still happens some. Over 49 favs is a sign. Also, an invite to the "In Explore" group pool for the photo that was in Explore.

I believe that the "In Explore" group's bot is not currently working, and that photos chosen by Flickr's Explore algorithm are not being invited to the group for the time being.

Apparently they have a backlog of over 5000 photos that have been in Flickr's Explore but that have not been automatically invited to the group.

Please see this recent post in the In Explore group from one of the administrators:

If I am wrong (or if I am right) I dare say one of the group's representatives is likely to post in this thread before too long, and will confirm this or correct me.

I think the rate at which you get faves is a good sign. Usually you get faves quite quickly if your photo goes on Explore page for the day. Also occasionally somebody will post a congrats message. Rarely happens these days though.

I want to change the picture on the album cover. I change the photo on the Edit and Organize photo fine. The right picture shows up. When you save it, it goes to the next page Albums and collections it doesn't change.

Thank you! I kept attempting to change the album cover photo in Organizer. SMH. Can't image who's making these random modifications to Flickr. Probably a higher ups child

I too have had this issue. I've recently created 5 albums. Can't change the photo in organizer. Was able to change the photo on 2 of them using the edit cover pencil icon. The other 3 only appear to work. But if I open the albums in an incognito window I see that it hasn't really changed. Eventually it reverts in my original window too.

I had the same problem, and the same inability to fix, for an album I created in the last couple of days. Even when I removed the photo I didn't want as the cover image, it still displayed as the cover photo for the album, despite no longer being in the album!!

Since the album itself had no views yet, I tried creating another album with the same name in Organizr, then copying all the photos over to the duplicate album. I was able to select the photo I wanted before saving, and it worked fine. I then deleted the earlier album where I was stuck with the wrong cover image.

Silly to need this workaround, which would only make sense for new albums. But until Flickr fixes this bug, the key when creating albums seems to be not to save without selecting the photo you actually want as the cover. Otherwise it will default as usual to the first photo saved in the album, which was always easy to change before-- but for now is impossible.

I was able to replace the album cover photo using the work-around pencil method. Until I go to the Organizr and do something else like changing the order of a photo and hit save, at which point the cover photo reverts back to the wrong one. Just another data point for the Flickr engineers.

Changing with the pen icon worked for me. HOWEVER, if looking at my flickr albums from a browser where I'm not logged in to Flickr, or when someone else looks at my albums, the cover photo is not changed. It is still the default one that was assigned when I created the album.

Changing in the organizer is also completely inoperable.

Pls fix.

I was surprised to see that, too. The pencil method which you suggested did work at first. But when I went to my albums the next day it had reverted back to the original photo. Weird indeed.

Related issue?

I have had the same issue when trying to change album covers within organizer but indeed the edit icon inside the cover photo works, but now only within Flickr. Perhaps related to this "change" Flickr made is the problem I have been getting for the past few days sharing albums on Facebook (meta) with updated cover images. In the past, it was generally necessary to use Meta's Sharing Debugger to get the album link to update with the new cover image because meta does not automatically continuously update linked images. However, even that has not been working of late as the links fail the update to the new album cover photos which in my case is very annoying because I like to show different cover images when I share updates to live albums to Meta. I used Meta's Developer Tool Graph API Explorer to look at the album cover image links and indeed it showed that the links fail to update. At this time I do believe the issue is at the source, i.e. Flickr. Flickr's acknowledgement and feedback will be welcome.

Well I tried the pencil method again yesterday. When I got up this morning the new cover photo had "stuck". However, I just now re-checked and it had reverted back to the old photo, yet again.
