The new model is founded on the example of the successful cooperation between industry and the university. It is a deductive realisation of the certification and assessment procedure, based on online testing of an open source learning management system (LMS). The success factors of the standardisation and certification model are examined further by investigating the conceptual development, the technical-didactical form of the concept and the interface management. It concludes that, on the whole, joint industry-university collaboration models have expedient side effects, such as mutual financial benefits or the development of high-quality training opportunities for both the students and the industrial customers.</div><div></div><div></div><div>Book Reviews 297 William Thomas, Architect, 1799-1860. GLENN MCARTHUR and ANNIE SZAMOSI. Ottawa: Carleton University Press 1996. Pp. xviii, 150, illus. $60.00 cloth, $40.00 paper McArthur and Szamosi's new monograph on architect William Thomas (1799-1860) is a pleasure to examine, because of the fine book design and illustrations, and a pleasure to read, because of the fascinating contents. It is always a comfort to see assembled the reuvre of an architect whose work one has admired in Toronto, Hamilton, London, and Halifax. Indeed, McArthur and Szamosi transport the reader to Britain, where Thomas, after apprenticing with a carpenter-joiner, became aware ofthe work of Charles Barry and A.W. Pugin. (Thomas's talented brother John was 'carver in chief of the Houses of Parliament .) William Thomas worked as an architect in Leamington, a fashionable spa centre during the 1830s. This close scrutiny of the preimmigration years of architects is an admirable model for Canadian architectural historians. The cost of studying overseas and obtaining the necessary illustrations demands the continuation ofa good grant system for writers, at a time when such assistance is disappearing. McArthur and Szamosi acknowledge the contribution towards publishing costs by the Ontario Heritage Foundation, but, ironically, the present provincial government just terminated all OHF grants. We are given tantalizing bits from William Thomas's diary, revealing him 'as a man of extraordinary optimism and fortitude,' and written during the arduous voyage to North America in 1843. He becomes an eminent architect in Toronto, at a time when Thomas Young, Henry Bowyer Lane, and John Howard have already established themselves as resident architects. Thomas passes on his legacy to apprentices, such as William Storm (1826-92), and Thomas's sons William Tutin Thomas (1829- 92), and Cyrus Thomas (1833-19n). Thomas is triumphant with his design for St Lawrence Hall and Market (1845-50). Here is a sophisticated structure that helped to elevate Toronto out of its 'muddy little York' era. His work speaks well to the functions of his buildings. We can compare the 'elegantly urbane' nature of St Lawrence Hall with one ofhis last works, the Don Jail (1857-64), Tqronto, where the rusticated and vermiculated stonework is 'massive and menacing and suitably depressing.' Thomas's trademark sculptural elements are found on both buildings - for example, Father Time at the jail and civic elements at the hall. McArthur and Szamosi position their discussion of Thomas's plans 298 The Canadian Historical Review for the Don Jail in relation to penal design in Britain and the United States, and eventually bring 'the local prison' in Kingston into the story because of a Provincial Prison Inspection in 1860. This unnecessarily downplays the significance of the Provincial Penitentiary (not a local prison), founded near Kingston as the first Canadian reform institution with a radial plan in 1832. The surprising exclusion of this nationally significant site in Harold Kalman's recent History ofCanadian Architecture has not helped matters. In general, more notes by McArthur and Szamosi of Canadian architectural developments would be appreciated: for example, Thomas's St George's Church of r85r in Guelph with its asymmetrical fac,:ade ('a first for Thomas and for North America') could have been compared with Fred Cumberland' s Church ofthe Ascension of 1850-51 in Hamilton and William Coverdale's proposal for St Andrew's Presbyterian Church of 1852 in Gananoque, Ontario. The discussion of Thomas's Union School of 1848 in London, Ontario, could have been amplified by placing it within the style considered appropriate for the new reform schools as illustrated, for example, in David Stow's Training System of Education (7th ed. 1846) and endorsed by Egerton Ryerson and J. George Hodgins in their publications on educational matters. This Tudor Gothic style with an Eplan was still popular in the r85os, as illustrated in Hodgins's School House of 1858 - indeed, as late as 1872 John Power designed such a school for Sydenham Village, Frontenac County. Thomas's Union School can be seen as an early example of this type in Ontario. The authors occasionally dampen their enthusiasm for Thomas to too great a degree: his Adelaide Buildings of 1844 in Toronto are characterized...</div><div></div><div> dd2b598166</div>
