The game's title "Underworld" had multiple meanings; she was visiting multiple underworld locations across different cultures as part of her adventure, reaching a darker part of her "internal journey", and the tone of the adventure and locations was more sombre than earlier games.[33][16] The storyline of Underworld was made "epic" and dramatic, with the team wanting to raise the stakes.[16] While a single location with multiple ruins to explore was considered, the team wanted a world-spanning adventure that would take in multiple ruins themed around underworld legends worldwide, informing the game and story design from that point on.[33]

The story takes place after the events of Tomb Raider: Legend. Lara retrieves the whereabouts of ruins her father, Richard James Croft, was going to explore at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. Once inside the ruins, she finds herself inside Niflheim, one of the Norse Underworlds, and inside Niflheim, a statue of Thor, and one of Thor's Gauntlets, but is knocked unconscious by mercenaries sent by Amanda Evert, who steal the Gauntlet. Upon regaining consciousness, Lara follows them back to the surface and onto Amanda's ship, where she finds out that Amanda has dug Jacqueline Natla from the ruins of Atlantis. Natla tells Lara that Richard had found the 'wrong' Norse underworld, and that the answer lay off the coast of Thailand. Lara reaches Thailand, and finds another Norse underworld inside it, this time with a statue of Odin, Thor's father, but the Gauntlet inside is missing, and the map to the rest of Thor's artifacts has been destroyed. Lara finds her greatest clue to the Gauntlet's location in the message left behind by her father:


Spoiler-free Synopsis: Early on, Lara realizes that her mother was not transported to Avalon after all, but to the Norse underworld, Helheim. In order to enter that realm she must obtain a powerful artifact: the thunder god Thor's hammer, Mjolnir. As the travels the globe seeking clues to the hammer's location, Lara discovers connections between the underworld myths of various cultures. The Hindu Bhogavati, the Mayan Xibalba, the Norse Niflheim, Valhalla and Helheim all have real-world counterparts, and Lara must brave the hazards of each location so that she might find the hammer and, ultimately, the truth.

She soon meets Jacqueline Natla, the Atlantean God-Queen who was the antagonist in both the original Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider Anniversary. She is the prisoner of Amanda Evert, the main antagonist of Tomb Raider Legend. Natla tells Lara that Avalon is in fact Helheim, the Norse underworld, and that this is where her mother went to after the events in Nepal when Lara was a young girl. She directs her next to a coastal temple in Thailand.


Lara explores the passages underneath her home and discovers the location of the belt, but a Atlantean Lara Copy, similar to that seen in the original Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider Anniversary, destroys her home and attacks her companions. Lara then goes to Mexico to Xibalba, the Maya underworld, where she recovers the belt and also finds out about a mysterious substance closely linked to the Norse ruins and the legend of Thor called Eitr.


In an ancient ruin on the floor of the Mediterranean Sea, LaraCroft uncovers proof of the Norse underworld and the mythicalhammer. As Lara attempts to unravel the secrets behind these myths,her perilous journey leads to a forgotten power that, if unleashed,could lay waste to all civilization.
