If you don't wish to write code yourself, but you want to have access to a feature, what's wrong with hiring someone to do the work for you? A patch to the source code that you could enable to build a version of gawk with your feature would work well. Or an extension function might do the trick. If you really don't need the feature after all, then what was the point in starting the discussion in the first place? I am not being sarcastic, I am genuinely curious.
