The problem with TLS finger is that TLS is constantly requiring more resources, so it cannot be used on a lot of retrocomputing hardware. If you wanted to protect mission-critical data over the finger protocol, another option would be PGP or GPG. But that would be like wearing storm-trooper armor while riding a skateboard.
