I can't see any difference between 4.4.2 and 4.4.3 using x11 either.

Is it possible that when you installed 4.4.3, an older version of
gnuplot_x11 was left on your system?  Having a mis-match in versions
between gnuplot and gnuplot_x11 might cause a problem.
