       I thought that this limitation would be common knowledge.  That is 
reason for the lack of more detail.

       A single plot command is being used to plot data stored in 17 
different data files.  Nothing is being rotated.  And that number of files 
appears to be the limit.  If more files are added gnuplot says that there 
was an error and that it needs to exit.

       If that is in fact the limit it seems quite reasonable to me.  But we 
still need to pack more data onto our charts.  So, I am searching for ways 
to do that.  And reloading a saved png file or something like that for use 
as a background for the plot sounds attractive.  We would like to learn how 
to load picture files and use them for background anyway.

       Again, the plot data are so different from one another that several 
files cannot be compressed into a single file.

       This particular scientific effort is moving along at a gradually 
increasing speed.  I am the general manager and have to deal with actual 
programming tasks, effort coordination, and project direction.  And I cannot 
keep pace with other personnel computer code development efforts.
