GTK4 will drop support for Xorg, so I'm happy to see that the Church of St. Ignucius finally came to the awareness that something needs to be done to keep Emacs running nicely on both Xorg as well as Wayland. On the emacs-announce mailing-list it has been announced today that GNU Emacs will support Qt6 as graphical toolkit backend via ./configure --with-toolkit=qt6. Commits have already been merged into the master branch, so Emacs version 31 will be the first version to support this. Similar to ‘pure-GTK’, it's also a ‘pure’ implementation that is somewhat parallel to Emacs' internal abstractions. Some people have already been discussing if we can squeeze more features out of Qt6 by using its (proprietary) Enterprise Edition, for example for multi-touch gestures. This is also great news for the Android port of Emacs, since Qt6 scales well for small- and medium-sized displays. https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/info-gnu-emacs/
