I'm happy to report that MagicJack Plus works like a champ in place of a
genuine POTS line.  The modem likes it and I routinely see 31.2 connects, save
2 folks in my region that have had modem or line problems for a long time now,
and continue to do so. At about $30/year (plus the inital $67 investement for
the equipment and 6 months of calling) for unlimited calling with NO long
distance charges, it sure as heck beats the pants off of either the cable
company's $30/month (also with unlimited continental US calling) or ~$28/month
PLUS LD charges for Telco lines.

A solid broadband connection is required, but once programed from your PC, a PC
is *not* required for continued use - it comes with it own tiny power supply
adapter.

This works far better, from what I'm given to understand, than the original
MagicJack setup.  YMMV.
