Riding over something sharp—glass, a nail, barbed wire—and puncturing a tire is something that we’ve all probably dealt with. It’s always a drag. Hopefully, we have the tools and resources to fix it quickly and get on our way. But finding out that those things were planted there on purpose, for the sole reason of harassing cyclists? That feels sinister. But it’s exactly what has been happening along a bike path near Gold Coast, Australia. According to 7News, several cyclists have been injured and bikes damaged. Hundreds of tacks, nails, and screws have been found scattered along the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, which is already very popular among cyclists, and stretches more than 24 kilometers. The path opened March 1, and was a $15-million project to replace an old railroad with a multi-use path. The Daily Mail reports that both state and federal governments chipped in to fund the project, which drew more than 8,000 users in its first two weeks. It’s one of several recreational trails set to be completed since the state government recently passed a law allowing the repurposing of unused railroad tracks. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/cyclists-targeted-in-bike-path- sabotage/ar-AA19kpBo
