Windows Update. Guaranteed. Microsoft have form. If you disabled updates in XP then they simply sent a command to cause svchost.exe to max out your CPU and make your system unuseable. https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/windows-xp-svchost-exe-consuming-100-cpu.2902369/ If you turned Windows Updates back on the problem just went away. Be wary, very wary, of anything Bill Gates has ever had his mucky paws near.
