Windows Update. Guaranteed.

Microsoft have form.

If you disabled updates in XP then they simply sent a command to cause svchost.exe to max out your CPU and make your system unuseable.

If you turned Windows Updates back on the problem just went away.

Be wary, very wary, of anything Bill Gates has ever had his mucky paws near.
