NEW BADEN, Ill. — A New Baden, Illinois, man will spend the rest of his life in prison after admitting to murdering his ex-girlfriend in 2023. Emmet Metzger pleaded guilty on April 7 to the first-degree murder of Alexis Maki. He was sentenced to life in prison on Monday. "While no sentence can bring Alexis back, I hope that a new chapter can begin for her family and friends and that they can continue to work closer to obtaining some semblance of closure,” said Clinton County State’s Attorney J. D. Brandmeyer. On Nov. 4, 2023, police were advised that a man had called 911 stating he was at the police station and that he needed to be arrested. The man, later identified as Metzger, told dispatch that he had shot his ex- girlfriend at their shared residence, according to a press release. He was arrested, and police found Maki unresponsive at the residence on Hanover Street. Metzger told police he and Maki were previously in a dating relationship. He stated that he retrieved the gun from a case in the bedroom of the home, loaded and fired it at Maki, according to the release. After the shooting, he said he threw the gun on the floor, ran down the stairs and called 911. Maki was a radiology student at Kaskaskia College and a bartender at Grit and Tonic. Metzger will receive no credit for the 583 days he has served in jail, the ruling said. The sentence was issued by Associate Circuit Judge Douglas C.
