To me, 'threading' is an ambiguous term. Its /actual/ meaning is 
'sorting by References' -- as opposed to sorting by any of a number of 
other alternatives, such as date, subject, From, etc.

And, again, personally, I prefer to do my sorting 'otherwise' than by 
references.

So, for my understanding, in order to understand what you want to do, 
you would (perhaps) change your premise term from threading to sorting.
